mop tree

Has anyone heard of mop trees? (Not sure of the correct term for it), and how well do you think they will grow in Canberra? I've heard they are low maintenance, but have bad roots that could cause issues down the track?

Any help is much appreacited!

That's probably Robinia pseudoacacia 'Umbraculifera' (type 'umbraculifera' into the Plant Selector's Plant Name Search). The root issue with them is that they're prone to suckering. Root damage from digging in surrounding beds or lawn mowers can produce vigorous, thorny shoots of the rootstock plant.
If you have a spot where root disturbance wont be an issue, they'll grow fine in Canberra. Otherwise, other 'lollipop' trees to consider are Designer Maple (Acer platanoides 'Globosum' and Designer Flowering Ash (Fraxinus ornus 'Meczek').
