I am from Latvia and this is my first experience in planting vegetables and flowers in Australia. So I made some mistakes (e.g. I planted some flowers too late and now it's too hot for them to grow even in the shade).

I planted tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, sweet pea, dills, watermelon, sweet corns, garlic, thymus, camomile, calendula and nasturtium (the last three for my favourite tea) in a small area near the house We eat tomatoes each day at the moment and all from only one tomato plant, it still has many more tomatoes with marvellous smells. I planted the sweet peas all at different times to eat them for an extended periods.

I use the grass mowed from the lawn as mulch. I cover the area with a thick layer, so if there are any seeds from the weeds, they are not able to grow through it. The mulch helps to save the water and it creates good soil for us.

One of the most important tasks is to get my own seeds. It will save our budget. But most of all, we will have seeds exactly for this certain territory, and for certain people. As a biologist I know that plants are able to change their genetic information to be the best for our family.
