I'd never much understood the attraction to this plant. A curiosity with its narrow habit and odd stem-hugging leaves, I'd concede. But the NZ'ers have cracked it. Repeat planting in sculptural arrangements turns this into a winning landscape accent. There is a time limit: the middle of this group of three is beginning to morph into the species' less interesting adult, tree stage. But nothing is forever in a garden.
