homegrown - welcome

There is nothing like fresh organic veges. I used to have quite a large vege patch which kept my husband and I quite happy as well as the many family members that would come to visit. But now we are starting from scratch again.

Last time we had the problem of the cooch grass growing into the garden, no matter how much we mulched and weeded. So this time we will be moving up. My husband has cut two large steel tanks into 3rds and we will be filling them with compost from a local feedlot. (apparently we can't do things in halves so we're getting 30 tonne of the stuff, not all for the vege patch). Then I will be covering it with a thick layer of sugercane mulch from my sisters cane farm (i think i'm spoilt)

I can't wait, i'm just soooo excited!

Let's hope it works!!!! I'll post some piccy's when we have it finished the first task.

Sounds great, i'd be excited too!!

Better be careful with that stuff from the feedlot though..Our town lost a few newly planted trees because it was too fresh..when we start our gardens our horse trainer mate is going to bring us a load of stable straw and the paddock next door is full of cattle..vegies should love it.

We're going to have raised beds too..our backs and knees will appreciate it
doubt if we'll be starting ours till next year so i'll be interested in how yours
turns out.

We have had an amazing crop of vegies this year, including believe it or not 12 foot tomato bushes with massive harvest to boot. as well as the the normal soil preparation (manures etc) my partner got on to a fertilizer called algoflash (the lable claims world record results) unfortunately it's only available through the home shopping mag, I guess you can track it down on line. I'm not sure if that was the magic ingredient but after using it on the whole garden we had giant sunflowers and chillie plants with so many chillies on them the plants could hardly stand up. Maybe its just all the hard work and the love that we've put in to our garden who knows?

Well I got my big pile of poo/ compost for my b'day. It actually looked quite impressive the whole 30tonne pile of it. No dramas yet with it being too overpowering, as the seedlings are doing great and in fact thriving....sorry no pics yet, I promise i will have some soon.

I used to dread the annual veggie patch start-up until I stopped trying to do it all at once. The plants don't go in all at the same time. They don't have the same needs either so I grow them where they are happy and it is less work for me.
Some spots are harder to keep weed free than others and I can put bigger, easier to weed plants there.

Hubby (not a gardener) has raided the vege garden again for his lunchtime sandwich. you just can't beat fresh picked salad veges and herbs! Now he's more enthusiastic about getting a shade cover over it before the summer heat arrives, as surely it will. makes me smile that all the time I was after shade cover last summer he ignored my pleas. now, what else can I plant that he'll love for his healthy lunch..let me see.. perhaps a visit to the nursery down the road is in order.

Thats great - we also cut down an old watertank and filled it with garden clippings newspaper and stable mulch from a friend. Because the stable mulch was fresh we had plans to let it all sit and compost for a while before we used them - the pumpkin seed from some scraps thought otherwise - we got over 40 pumpknis out of one bed and the front lawn. Now our 3 beds have matured and this spring I am looking forward to some great things from them.

An updayte - A friend who is into organic gardening told me once the worms were in the manure it was right to use around the plants - well you should see our worms.
