lawn replacement ground cover

Hello,
We are planning our courtyard garden and I was after some ideas for a ground cover that would work instead of lawn. There will be paving stones, although the ground cover will be walked on a little bit - a few times a week perhaps.
The courtyard faces west, and will get sun most of the day. Its in Richmond in Melbourne.
Please let me know if you have some ideas? I have seen a ground cover Thyme, but not sure if this would suit.

I'd really recomment two natives. Viola banksii, the Australian violet is a prolific flowerer (purple and white) and also Dichindra repens (Kidney Weed). I have both in full and part sun positions and they thrive. The more sun they get, the more I give them some water if it's been hot, but, really, they're both tough. They both handle frost, if you get those and will spread well. You don't even need to buy that many plants - simply pull each plant apart, keeping some roots, in about 4 or 5 sections and plant each. In no time, they'll be joining up and you can just slip or haul them back from the pavers. Good luck withn your courtyard.
