suitable shrubs for espaliering in darwin

Can anyone help? I am thinking of using the espalier method to shield sun from the western facing wall of my house. I live in Darwin so I am after a shrub that could be used to achieve this. My wall is 6 metres long and about 3 metres high and gets blasted by the afternoon sun.

Some discipline in the unruly tropics – I like it.
Assuming the usual initial qualification – β€˜it depends' – a few suggestions are:
Narrow leaf fig (Ficus binnendijkii) (with reservations about root zone) or a lime for something green and formal.
Bougainvillea for something more colourful and flexible.
Or Pride of the Cape (Bauhinia galpinii) or Angel's Trumpet (Brugmansia) (with reservations about hallucinogenic properties) for more of a challenge.

Believe me when I say that there is no discipline in my garden! Can you tell me about the Ficus binnendijikii's root zone? The area I wan to plant out is actually quite narrow, the wall is right next to the drive way which in turn is right next to the fence. Would I be correct in thinking that Pride of the Cape may be the better option in terms of root zone?

Yes – definitely bauhinia over fig when roots are the issue.
