Was given this groundcover and it has taking over and is really good, but quite invasive, cutting it back is no problem as it is tough but am wondering if it takes nutrients from other plants?

Sounds like Drosanthemum hispidum. It does have branches that can take root as they spread. It's not a hungry plant but will be taking some nutrients. But as long as you're keeping it in its place and it's not actually over-running other plants, then there's probably no reason why there wouldn't be enough to go around.
