i also have more sand than soil!

I live in the Gilmore valley just outside of Tumut NSW and my soil is also very sandy. The weather here gets below freezing in Winter and last Summer we had a week of 45C. Trying to keep my garden in good shape is a constant battle. I find that digging in heaps of compost and keeping everything well mulched helps a lot. I have just bought a Licorice tree and a couple of Stone Pines (pine nuts) and some Marshmallow plants. I'd love a Carob tree but they don't like the frost! Can anyone suggest any other more unusual plants that I could grow in this climate?

How about a Strawberry Tree (several Arbutus) or Osage Orange (Maclura pomifera)?
