A messy brown tangle of flowerless, almost leafless stems probably isn't everyone's cup of tea but it was one of those WHAT IS THAT!?! moments for me between airports on the way out of NZ. I think the answer is Coprosma acerosa. The pale backdrop and foreground aren't so flattering. I'd like to see it against a dark wall or planting and alongside charcoal paving. It looks like excellent habitat for little birds.
