Ginger lily season in Melbourne and Hedychium ‘Tara' was the one to catch my eye. Orange wasn't a favourite colour in the pastel, cottage garden 80's when I was first learning about gardening. Now, I love the way these saturated spires fire up when the low sun gets under the required protective tree canopy. Looking like it comes straight from the tropics, Tara is actually Nepalese and performs even better in colder climates than the better-known Kahili ginger – but presumably shares its weed potential in moist, fertile bush areas.

Fast plant facts

For a great flower fertiliser, place your banana skins just below the surface of the soil. They rot quickly and supply nutrients to your plants.

Palmetto

Palmetto Soft Leaf Buffalo is ideally suited as a lawn in many applications.
